What kind of Results can you get with an Argus A??
To find out, I embarked northward to the beautiful coastal city of San Buenaventura...aka Ventura, California. You've heard the song of "Ventura Highway"?? Yep, that's the place. I shot with ASA 100 Kodak Gold and metered with my trusty head held Gandy Gandometer.
All shots taken hand held, 1/200th at f/11.
Typical Ventura car.
Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra.
One of the nice things about living in the LA area is bumping into celebrities. Here Jonathan Livingston Seagull stops by the Ventura Pier (the longest pier on the West Coast) with his family.
Can a 1936 Argus A really rival the results from a 1999 $1500 camera??
In a word, yes, if the $1500 camera is digital.
Those of you with little faith, these shots REALLY were shot with the Gold Argus A.
I was pleasantly surprised with the pics. The Argus A is fully capable of turning out quite nice 4x6 or 5x7 prints -- not too bad for a camera old enough to be a retired great grandfather. I was worried about light leaks with the A's basic back door, but no problems-- even though all shots were done in bright sunlight. Hmm.... maybe those old cameras can be better than we think.
OK, so I cheated with the digital comparison, but I needed a good teaser lead -- proof once again the ends justify the means.
